domain du castel
Perched on the terraces and steep terrain of the Judean Hills, Domaine Du Castel is the gate to Jerusalem. Through all of history, the main passageway up to Jerusalem came through the 'Castel.' It was here that the Romans, Crusaders and later, Jewish Refugees forced their way through the gates to attack Jerusalem. These same battlefields are now ideal for wine growing. The steep, hills, ancient terraces, limestone and extra cool nights make for one of the very best boutique wines in Israel. Ben Zaken first planted his vineyards in 1988 and founded Domaine Du Castel. Since then, his wines have won acclaim throughout the world. Ben Zaken, an immigrant from France , first arrived in Israel as a child, escaping the Vichy Dictatorship. His father, a winery worker from Bordeaux always dreamed of having his own vineyard and winery. Ben Zaken is carrying on his father's legacy around the Crusader Castel in the entrance to Jerusalem.
