gush etzion
In the Judean Mountains, 900 meters high, just South of Jerusalem, lies the up and coming Kosher boutique winery, Gush Etzion. Often, covered in snow in the winter, their vineyards cling to terraces, built 1000's of years ago by their grape growing predecessors. In the mid 90's the Rosenthal family recognized this area as historic, quality, grape growing 'terroir.' No one had continued the grape growing tradition for thousands of years, despite the perfect limestone soils and climate conditions. What struck them as most significant, was the warm sun during the day and very cold nights during the growing season. This climate ensures full ripe, fruity flavors, while keeping the needed acidity for good balance and structure. The winery was built later, together with a restaurant and visitors center. Gush Etzion Wines have won high accolades in both the press and wine competitions. Around the winery there are many ancient olive trees that the winery produces amazing olive oil from.
